A South Korean court has reaffirmed the conviction of a 24-year-old man for multiple sexual crimes, including rape, after critical evidence surfaced from an unlikely source. Security footage revealed the assault reflected on a washing machine lid, serving as key proof against the defendant, who had initially denied the allegations.
The Chuncheon branch of the Seoul High Court sentenced the man to seven years in prison for crimes including rape, unlawful confinement, and indecent assault. The ruling was based on the victim’s testimony and the security footage, which prosecutors presented as decisive evidence in the case.
Prosecutors faced challenges in substantiating the victim’s allegations until she submitted a 39-minute security camera recording. Although just two minutes of the footage showed both individuals, it did not directly depict the assault. However, investigators observed that the crime was reflected on the plastic lid of a washing machine throughout the remaining footage. The video was then sent for forensic analysis, which verified the details of the attack.
The man, who initially refuted all accusations, admitted to the crimes once confronted with the enhanced video evidence. He was charged with sexually assaulting his then-girlfriend on six occasions between March and April last year, detaining her for several hours after she attempted to break up with him. Her decision to leave was prompted by the discovery of explicit photos and videos of other women on his phone.
At the time of these allegations, the accused was already on trial for related offenses, including sexually assaulting a former partner, threatening to leak footage of the attack, and having unlawful relations with a minor in 2022. His prior charges had added complexity to the case, but the newly presented footage played a key role in securing his conviction.
In November, a lower court initially handed down an eight-year prison sentence. However, after the man appealed, the Chuncheon branch of the Seoul High Court reduced it to seven years, considering a settlement he had reached with one of the victims.
The court also ordered the man to wear an electronic ankle tag for seven years after his release and prohibited him from working in facilities that cater to children, juveniles, and individuals with disabilities for the same period. Investigators, after enhancing and analyzing the footage, confirmed the assault, leading to his eventual confession and additional charges.
