The third and final suspect in the infamous Pattaya “barrel murder” case has been arrested in Vietnam and extradited to South Korea after evading capture for four months. The suspect, a South Korean national in his 30s, was apprehended by Vietnamese authorities on September 12 and sent back to South Korea earlier this week.
This case, which shocked the public in both South Korea and Thailand, revolves around the murder of South Korean national Roh Eui-jong. His body was discovered on May 11, 2024, encased in a cement-filled barrel at the bottom of the Map Prachan reservoir in Bang Lamung district, Chon Buri, by divers who were conducting a recovery operation.
The gruesome find sparked an extensive international search, culminating in the arrest of all three suspects involved in the crime. This latest arrest concludes the pursuit, ending a high-profile investigation that spanned multiple countries and involved cooperation from various law enforcement agencies.
The apprehension occurred after South Korean police received intelligence regarding his location in Vietnam, prompting them to collaborate with local authorities. They undertook a meticulous operation that culminated in Kim’s arrest in the Dong Da district of Hanoi on September 23, 2024.
Two of the original suspects were apprehended shortly after the murder: Lee Roun was captured upon returning to South Korea, while Lee Young-jin was detained in Cambodia. These arrests and Kim’s recent capture showed a swift and coordinated response by law enforcement agencies in both Thailand and South Korea to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Despite the successful arrests, the motive behind this gruesome crime remains unclear, leaving many questions unanswered. The case has gained attention in both nations, with the challenges of international law enforcement collaboration while drawing focus to the alarming reality of violent crime within expatriate communities. As the judicial process unfolds, many await further clarity on this tragic event’s circumstances.
Kim Hyeong-gwon’s arrest concluded a four-month manhunt following the heinous murder of Eui Jong Roh, whose body was found in a plastic barrel in the Map Prachan reservoir near Pattaya.
After fleeing Thailand to Laos and entering Vietnam illegally, Hyeong-gwon attempted to evade capture by staying in various small hotels in Da Nang and Hanoi. Now that he is in custody, Vietnamese authorities are working closely with their South Korean counterparts to facilitate his extradition.
