On Thursday, the Supreme Court confirmed a life sentence for 34-year-old Cho Seon, who committed a stabbing attack near Sillim Station in Seoul in 2023. The incident led to one death and three injuries. This ruling concludes the court’s assessment of Cho’s actions during the event.
The Supreme Court affirmed the lower court’s decision to sentence Cho to life in prison, citing multiple charges, including murder and attempted murder. The court also mandated that he be monitored with an electronic ankle bracelet for 30 years, regardless of potential parole.
In its verdict, the court emphasized that the lower courts’ rulings were justified based on various factors, such as Cho’s age, behavioral tendencies, and the context of his actions, including his relationship with the victims and motive.
On July 21, 2023, Cho stabbed a 22-year-old man, resulting in the victim’s death, and wounded three other men in their 30s near Sillim Station in Gwanak District, southern Seoul. All the victims were strangers to him. Following the attack, Cho was apprehended at the scene and later arrested two days afterward.
Initially, Cho confessed to the police that he committed the crime due to feelings of inferiority, aiming to inflict pain on those he perceived as happy. However, during the trial, he changed his narrative, claiming that he suffered from a mental illness that impaired his ability to make rational decisions. The Supreme Court dismissed these arguments, asserting no violations of Cho’s right to a fair trial.
A lower court had partially acknowledged Cho’s claims of suffering from delusions; however, it emphasized that his actions were “extremely violent and heinous” irrespective of his mental condition.
The prosecution had previously sought the death penalty, arguing that Cho exhibited an alarming disregard for human life and showed no remorse for his actions, leaving the victims’ families to endure significant suffering.
Cho’s initial stabbing spree was followed by another attack targeting strangers in Bundang, south of Seoul, just two weeks later. This sequence of violent incidents shocked the nation and prompted a surge of online discussions, with some users threatening copycat crimes.
