A trio of Russian nationals involved in pickpocketing on Seoul’s subway system has received suspended prison sentences, as per legal sources. The Seoul Central District Court’s Criminal Chamber 17, presided over by Judge Kim Han-chul, sentenced the three individuals, identified as A (46), B (46), and C (39), to one year in prison, with an additional two years of probation.

The group’s criminal activities came to light following their arrest and subsequent charges of special theft. The court’s decision entails a one-year prison term, which will be suspended for two years, indicating that the individuals will avoid immediate incarceration but must abide by strict probation conditions during this time.

After arriving in South Korea on tourist visas last November, a group of three Russian nationals engaged in a series of pickpocketing incidents on the subway system in Seoul. Acting in a coordinated manner, they targeted passengers during crowded rush hours, with each member assigned specific roles in the theft operation.

One acted as a blocker, obstructing the victim’s path, while another served as a distraction, creating a diversion in the bustling crowd. Meanwhile, the third member skillfully extracted wallets from the open bags of unsuspecting subway riders.

The trio’s criminal activities were meticulously planned before they arrived in South Korea, and they intended to flee back to Russia within 15 days of executing their crimes. However, their plans were thwarted when the police received reports of theft from victims and launched undercover investigations.

Subsequently, the individuals were apprehended on November 13 last year during a stakeout operation. They were found in possession of stolen cash, department store gift certificates, and multiple mobile phones.

While the defendants claimed they were in South Korea for tourism and shopping purposes, the prosecution found their extensive presence on the subway system suspicious. With an average of five hours spent daily on the subway over nine consecutive days, coupled with the search of their accommodations, the prosecution concluded that their activities were indicative of criminal intent. As a result, the court found the group guilty and issued the suspended prison sentences.

Despite initially denying the accusations, the group eventually confessed to the crimes during the legal proceedings. The court considered their confession and the settlement agreements reached with the victims. Acknowledging these factors as favorable, the court deemed it necessary to punish the perpetrators.
