A man in his thirties, believed to be Korean, was arrested by the police on January 16 for the assault of a female Singaporean student in broad daylight last week. The suspect, whose identity is currently undisclosed, is accused of repeatedly punching the student in the face around 4 p.m. on January 12, according to information provided by the Dongdaemun Police Station.

The incident took place at a crosswalk in Hwigyeong-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, in Seoul, where the victim was walking when she became the target of the assault. The arrest follows swift action by the authorities in response to the reported attack on the Singaporean student in South Korea.

The assault on the Singaporean student occurred as she was crossing a street at a crosswalk in Hwigyeong-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul. The police disclosed that the suspect, who has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and faces communication challenges, carried out the attack. Despite the reported slight injury and swelling on the victim’s face, she managed to escape the scene and subsequently filed a report with the police.

The acknowledgment of the suspect’s autism spectrum disorder diagnosis raises questions about the intersection of mental health and criminal behavior, emphasizing the need for nuanced approaches in handling such cases.

The victim, identified as Ms Ng, sustained a slight facial injury, including swelling, during the attack. Following the assault, Ms Ng promptly filed a police report after managing to escape the scene of the incident. Details shared by the victim on an online college community indicated that the suspect, accompanied by a male family member, unexpectedly assaulted her while crossing the road.

In the online post made prior to the suspect’s arrest, Ms Ng explained that the family member accompanying the suspect intervened, attempting to pull him away from her during the assault.

In response to the attack on the Singaporean student, the police offered her a smartwatch as a safety measure against potential future assaults. The smartwatch system is designed to identify the wearer’s location during emergencies, facilitating a prompt response from authorities to potential crimes.

Typically provided to victims of stalking and other potential crimes, the smartwatch includes an “emergency” button. When pressed by the wearer, it triggers an immediate report to the police, enhancing the victim’s ability to seek assistance and ensuring rapid intervention in case of threats.

The police have said they are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident involving the attack on the international student from Singapore. The victim, identified as an international student, is reported to be enrolled at a university near where the incident occurred.

The authorities aim to gather additional information and insights that could contribute to understanding the circumstances surrounding the attack, ensuring a comprehensive examination of the case.
