A local court in South Korea sentenced a man to life imprisonment on Wednesday for fatally stabbing his girlfriend after she announced their breakup. The Suwon District Court also imposed a five-year probation period, highlighting the defendant’s “distorted obsession” with his partner as a motivating factor for the violent act.
Kim Leah, 27, received a life sentence in the initial trial for murdering his girlfriend and severely injuring her mother during the incident. Authorities revealed that she had previously assaulted and threatened another woman with whom she had been involved before committing these offenses.
According to the court’s findings, Kim first met the victim, identified as A, when he transferred to a university in March 2023. They began dating later that year, but Kim’s behavior soon became controlling and obsessive, leading to frequent conflicts. He displayed jealousy over A’s friendships and monitored her phone calls, leading to escalating arguments where he insulted A and damaged her property.
The violence intensified over time, culminating in a severe physical assault in March of this year. When A expressed her desire to end the relationship, Kim threatened her life, declaring, “I will kill not only you but also those around you.” Text messages between the two revealed Kim’s alarming mindset, where he insisted that A needed to be “punished” for angering him and hinted at wanting to decorate her injuries “in a fancy way for the last time.”
On March 25, after A and her mother, B, visited Kim’s residence to confront him about his abusive behavior, a confrontation turned deadly. When B accused Kim of “friendship violence,” he attacked A with a knife, inflicting multiple stab wounds to her neck and chest. Despite B’s attempts to intervene, Kim pursued A outside, threatening her further and demonstrating his intent to kill.
The court emphasized the brutality of Kim’s actions and noted that there were no mitigating factors that could lessen his culpability. Describing the crime as “extremely cruel and tragic,” the judges determined that Kim must be permanently isolated from society to safeguard the public and ordered him to offer an apology to the victim’s family.
On the 23rd of this month, the 14th Criminal Division of the Suwon District Court, led by Chief Judge Ko Kwon-hong, imposed a life sentence on Kim, stating, “There are no circumstances to consider regarding the motive for the crime, and the methods and outcomes are exceedingly cruel and horrific.” The court emphasized the severity of Kim’s actions and the need to ensure public safety.
The judges rejected Kim’s assertions of depression and mental instability at the time of the offense, citing evidence that demonstrated the calculated nature of his assault. Reports indicated that Kim had harbored an unhealthy obsession with his girlfriend, often threatening to kill both her and himself if they were to part ways, and had resorted to violence during their altercations.
